Mini Football

Minis are the lifeblood of the club and, indeed, of the sport itself. And that’s why the GHFA, at the behest of Football NSW, has continually evolved the junior game since the Under 6s and Under 7s were first run in a non-competitive manner in 1977.

When the Hills Hawks first started in 1969, the inaugural Under 7 team played 11-a-side games on a full-sized football field. Nowadays, Under 6s through to Under 9s play what are called Small Sided Games (SSGs).

In SSGs, the pitches are smaller, the teams have fewer players and the games are played without goalkeepers for the first couple of years.

The focus is on getting as many players as possible to have as many touches of the football as possible in every game.

The aim is to promote skills and foster teamwork. The non-competitive nature of the game is meant to bolster self-esteem and, as teams will only play against clubs in their local area, it makes it much more convenient for mums and dads on a Saturday morning.

Please see the GHFA’s Small Sided Games Info Sheet attached for the rules that apply to different age groups. This sheet should also answer most of your questions on SSGs.
